| Notes (this edition) These notes were written by the original owner/seller/auctioner of the item and may be inaccurate.: | "East Gate, Seoul, by Moonlight" was issued in an edition of only 30 and has become quite scarce today. Elizabeth Keith 1887-1956: Elizabeth Keith was a British artist who became a print designer, working closely with publisher Watanabe Shozaburo. When she held an exhibition of her Korean watercolours in Tokyo in 1919, Watanabe suggested to turn the painting of the 'East Gate in Seoul' by moonlight into a colour print, resulting in the first print and marking the beginning of Keith's career as a print artist. Elizabeth Keith said in 1926 “A few years ago in Tokyo I held an exhibition of water-colour sketches portraying the everyday life of the Koreans. It was the first exhibition of Korean subjects ever held there. The leading colour printer, then a stranger to me, came to the exhibition and strongly advised me to have my water-colour of ‘East Gate, Seoul by Moonlight,’ made into a colour print. He declared that it would be a great success. I took his advice and he was right, for the subject is still the most popular of my prints.” In my opinion this print is in excellent condition,there are no creases,no tears or no damage whatsover. The frame is good but has seen better days, the mount has a slight stain to the right. This is a fantastic impression, the colours are rich and unfaded. It is signed bottom right in full in white pencil/crayon and has her "EK" in a circle monogram next to the signature. It was difficult to get decent images as the woodcut is behind glass. The piece measures overall including the frame 21.75''x16.5'' (55.5cm x 42cm) and the image measures 16.5''x11.75'' (42cm x 29.9cm) |

Tuesday, 16 September 2008 Exceptionally rare and highly sought after color woodblock print by well-known British printmaker Elizabeth Keith (1887-1956). Keith, essentially self-taught, traveled to Asia in 1915, exhibiting watercolors in Tokyo in 1919. Famed shin hanga publisher Watanabe admired the paintings and in 1920, based on an Elizabeth Keith watercolor, published Keith's first color woodblock print East Gate Seoul, Moonlight. Published in an edition of 30, the print is one of Keith's rarest and most admired. The print is signed in red pencil lower right. It is also monogrammed in the block (EK in a circle) and titled "East Gate, Seoul". The print is in good condition though it glued to backing with adhesive, there are remains of matt glue in the upper margin, minor toning, and there is blue marker along the right border. 18" x 12.75" (paper size).
