Guaranteed original Japanese woodblock print

ARTIST: Tsuruoka Kakunen

SUBJECT: Carmel, California (numbered edition: 70/100, signed, dated & numbered in pencil)

PUBLISHER: Watanabe (print bears the Watanabe "E" seal)

DATE: 1938

PROVENANCE: Obtained directly from the artist's family

SIZE: Oban design measures 10.25" x 15.25"

CONDITION: Excellent color, impression, condition.

NOTE: Kakunen was a shin hanga artist who did only a handful of designs including several San Franciso subjects. That Watanabe (publisher of Hasui, Shinsui, etc.) published his work is testament to how skilled an artist he was. His prints are generally hard to locate. See images

Japanese woodblock print Carmel by Kakunen. View of a pine tree and cabin on the California coast. Very good impression and color, fine condition. R margin slightly trimmed into publisher’s seal. 15 1/4” x 10 1/4”. Pencil signed, double sealed, printed in Japan in 1938.

1938 Carmel Highlands Japanese Woodblock by Kakunen


This is a genuine original limited edition Watanabe published, vertical oban format, first edition, shin hanga Japanese woodblock print by Tsukuoka Kakunen dated Showa 13 (1938). The print is in fine condition, edition 72/100, and pencil signed by the artist in the left margin. Excellent impression, color and registration. The print has never been framed or mounted. No foxing, toning folds or creases. The print has full margins . Subject matter is a Carmel California cottage in the fog. The print was published by Watanabe Shozaburo and bears the Watanabe "D" seal, and a red circular seal of Ono Gintaro master printer. Paper size is 10.25" x 15.25".
