This work is a bijin-ga ( print of beauty) by Chikanobu ( 1838-1912). He was a student of the great Kuniyoshi, Kunisada and Kunichika and was one of the most famous woodblock print artists of Meiji Period. Chikanobu and his family were samurai of a retainer of Tokugawa’s family. He participated at the battle of Tokyo between Shogunate’s army and Imperial army during Meiji’s restoration in 1868. This print is included in his famous series " Snow, Moon, Flower" printed in 1899 and represents a beauty on the front of the Asakusa's temple at Tokyo. A very beautiful print. |
