Notes (1st edition)Artist: Yoshida, Hiroshi, 1876-1950 Title: Matterhorn - Day Series: Europe Date: 1925 Medium: woodblock Illustrated: Abe, pl. 18 Comments: Oversized Some examples of this scene contain both a "jizuri" seal and a Watanabe 6mm seal (see an example in this database). It is said that Yoshida finished his collaboration with Watanabe after the 1923 earthquake, so I am not sure why there are examples of this 1925 scene with a Watanabe publisher seal. Furthermore, the jizuri seal suggests a printing by Yoshida, yet the Watanabe seal suggests a printing by Watanabe printers, thus a contradiction. Perhaps Yoshida printed and then sold the completed prints via Watanabe(?). ??? ???????? ??14?? ?????? ????:53.7cmx38.7cm

Hiroshi Yoshida (1876-1950)

'Matterhorn, Day'

Offered here is a beautiful original woodblock print by Hiroshi Yoshida, circa 1925. Double oban size - print image measures 20 x 14 3/16 inches and sheet measures 21 1/4 x 16 1/2 inches. Print is titled at lower left and signed in pencil in lower right margin. Also has printed mark/signature in lower left corner. This work is from a 1925 edition of 50 prints, making this quite rare.

Condition looks very good with good color. Paper is lightly toned - moreso on reverse. There is likely minor color fading, but with cleaning, this would freshen up beautifully and would be a prize for collectors of Yoshida prints. There are some creases in print and upper left side shows some discoloration from UV paper toning. Reverse side shows tape residue from earlier framing. This is old, dried adhesive and appears to be on surface of paper only.
Condition:
Faint staining on reverse
