Colour: Fine colors
Impression: Fine. Overprinted hairlines with burnishing. Carefully executed bokashi (gradation of colors) shading. Entire background is imitation silk material (printed in gauffrage); silver metallic pigments to hairpiece; detailed carving.
Other Notes: A later much less sophisticated edition from recarved blocks was produced for use as a kuchi-e.

Title Poppy rare original kuchi-e version Artist Kiyokata Kaburagi 1878-1973 Description This attractive image of a delicate beauty was made for a kuchi-e for the novel "Uzumaki". It was re-carved and published around 1975 as one of "Meiji no Onna" ("Female Images in Meiji Period") together with Yoshitoshi and Chikanobu's bijin images. The original kuchi-e version is rare and very sought after. Signature 'Kiyokata'. Seal Artist's seal. Dated 1913. Medium/Technique Woodblock print. Impression Excellent - very good ... Cheese-cloth pattern embossed on the background. Colors Excellent ... Shomen-zuri patterns on the hair. Condition Excellent - very good ... Two horizontal kuchi-e folds. Conditions: Fine colors and impression . Light toning and slight soiling, as is common in these Kuchi-e pieces. The print is folded vertically (now flattened) as are all kuchi-e prints (because of their use), so this is not a negative. |
