The Tempo Era - Lovely image of a courtesan from the Tempo era from a series depicting women from different historical periods. She smiles as she looks over her shoulder, wearing a striking deep blue outer kimono patterned with fish, flowing water, and pine sprigs over a red tie-dyed under robe. Her hair is pulled back into two large buns, adorned with two combs and many hairpins, a few delicate wisps framing her face. Palanquin bearers march off into the distance at left along the Naka-na-cho, the main boulevard of the Yoshiwara, while two travelers pause near a roadside vendor at right. A beautiful design with the large figure dominating the subdued background. Includes fine line work and subtle burnishing in the hair, along with embossing in the white kimono collar. A great portrait, also in the collection of the British Museum.
