Notes (this edition) These notes were written by the original owner/seller/auctioner of the item and may be inaccurate.: | This is a very rare edition published by Iida Kunitaro.
Printed in 1937 by the Shin Hanga artist, Noel Nouet (1881-1969), this antique Japanese woodblock print is titled “Kagurazaka Showa.” Including the full un-trimmed margins, this print measures 15 ½” by 10 ¼”. Unfortunately, as you can see, all four corners of this woodblock have damage. Also, there is an arrow in one of our photos pointing to a tear on the left hand edge, which is nearly invisible. This print is not laid down or trimmed. |

Japanese woodblock print entitled "Kagurasaka at Ushigome" by the French artist Noel Nouet (1885-1969). This print is dated 1937 and is from the Scenes of Tokyo Views series. Measures 10 1/2" x 15 1/2". Edition and printer unknown, but possibly late 1930's. Ink signature. Nice crisp image, but there are some condition issues since the print was laid down on cardboard. The front top left corner is torn off, but I will include the portion of cardboard it was attached to. Someone skilled may be able to remove and reattach it. The front bottom right corner has a small tear and fold to it, but is still firmly attached. There is also a glue spot on the rear upper right corner that makes the paper appear thin from the front.

NOEL NOUET was a French artist who designed prints of Tokyo land-and-citiscapes. Little is known about Nouet's formative years. During the 1930's and 40's, he worked as the director of La Maison Franco-Japonaise and was a lecturer at Tokyo University. In 1935, Nouet began collaborating with the Tokyo publisher Doi Teiichi. His first woodblock prints were monochrome, based on his pen and ink sketches. These prints include "Gate of Zozoji Temple" and "Kikyo Gate of the Emperor's Palace". In 1936, Doi and Nouet produced a series of color woodblock prints called "Ten Views of Tokyo". All of these prints are signed and dated in English within the image. In 1946, Nouet published a book of his drawings called Tokyo: Fifty Sketches. He also wrote several books on Japanese history.

Artist Noel Nouet (1885-1969) (Active 1935-37, left Japan 1962) Title "Kagurazaka at Ushigomei" ("Katurazaka") Date 1937 (early printing by Yokoi, likely 1956-62) Series "Scenes of Tokyo Views" ("Tokyo fukkei zen nijuyon mai") (Learn more: ("The Woodblock Prints of Noel Nouet"). Publisher Doi Hangaten (with Doi "watermark" upper left) Carver/Printer Harada/Yokoi Image Size 9 3/8 x 14 1/4 Impression Fine. Superbly executed "bokashi" shading; very finely carved details, crisp key-lines. Condition Excellent. Strong colors; clean backside. (No flaws noted--pristine.) Reference/Illus na Comments A very "atmospheric" print, achieved by the skillful depiction of night lights. This Noute image pre-dates the well-known, nearly similar 1939 Koitsu image. It is believed that the extremely fine lines seen in the "key-blocks" of Noute's prints may have, in fact, been produced using zinc plates. (Learn more.)
