???? ??????? Watanabe C-type seal ?? Friday, 29 September 2006

Japanese woodblock print, Hasui. Early prewar edition as evidenced by the rectangular Watanabe publisher's seal in the lower righthand margin. The print dates from 1936; the title is Nigatsu Hall, Nara. It is pictured on page 453 of the Hotei catalog of Hasui prints. The print could use a good cleaning, as there is a mat line and some toning, as well as a bit of foxing in the image. Paper is supple, and I believe it will clean up well.

Nigatsudo Temple , Nara , by Kawase Hasui.

No reserve !

It’s a woodblock print. It seems to be in pretty good shape, It doesn’t appear to be faded, there’s no foxing, tears or holes. The corners do have faint bend- lines, there’s tape on the upper right hand corner, and tape residue on the upper left corner. Also in that same corner, the paper is a little thinner, probably from the tape being removed. The paper is an all-over biege color. I have very little experience with wood block prints so I don’t know if it has yellowed (very evenly all over) or whether it started out that color. There is bleed – through on the back side , Something is written in pencil in the lower margin, I can’t make out the word, it looks like Nana or Dona, then 1934. At first I thought it said Done 1934, but I don’t think that’s what it says. Hasui’s signature is the one used after 1924. I couldn’t find the printer’s signatures in my reference, maybe someone can help me out here? The age of the print is unknown. The color of the paper is more accurate on my moniter in the two pictures of the signatures, the full picture of the print appears in the listing to be a little whiter than it is in real life. I had to photograph the print for the full pic, it is scanned for the signature pictures. Print size is 9 3/8 x 14 1/8 paper is 10 1/4 x 15 3/8 .
