Notes (this edition) These notes were written by the original owner/seller/auctioner of the item and may be inaccurate.: | 5 BAKUFU OHNO FISH WOODBLOCK PRINTS c 1938 approx 11" x 16" Five original woodblock prints in the Familiar Fishes of Nippon, designed by Bakufu Ohno, with the original folders and some text in Japanese and English. The folders have titles that are woodblock prints as well. The folders and backing paper have stains, but overall the prints themselves are in good condition with a few having minor stains. The one included booklet has information on the carp (Funa) and it is dated 1938. Other fish represented are fugu (pufferfish) and grunts, as well as some that I don't recognize.

Condition Very good … Light toning, slight discolorations on the lower background. The print comes with the original portfolio cover, folder and explanation in Japanese. Description From "Dai-nippon Gyorui Gashu" (Pictures of Fish in Japan). "Ugui" (Dace) swim in a river. One is coming out from its hiding place. Bakufu was the best known for the series of 72 fish prints, "Dai-nippon Gyorui Gashu" (Pictures of Fish in Japan) which was published in 5 parts between 1937 and 1942 (or 44) as not-for-public, 500 limited edition. Its artistic beauty and scientific correctness have been admired by both print collectors as well as fish enthusiasts. The natural history prints had been created by using dead animals. Even John James Audubon who observed living animals extensively, used dead specimen when he made his detailed sketches. But Bakufu Ohno made the most of his designs from his sketches of living animals. These delightful and exquisite prints required between 135 to 200, some up to 250, impressions from the blocks, .
