| Notes (this edition) These notes were written by the original owner/seller/auctioner of the item and may be inaccurate.: | Monday, 4 December 2006 TATSUMI SHIMURA - Limited Edition "Sei (Shizuka)" - Quite (Stillness) "Sei" (Quite) this extremely rare woodblock by Tatsumi Shimura (1907-1980). Most often known by the name "Snow". Limited Edition, print 68 of 450. Tatsumi said about this print, "My parents wanted to name me "Yuki-o (Yuki means snow). The parents loved snow. They still do not yet calm down restlessly when it begins to snow. " He goes on to say about this print, " There is a beautiful sight of the snow in the morning. Nature make the malformed beauty to be beyond imagination during single night. I do not want to disturb it. I want to leave alone. I follow this title ‘Sei (Shizuka)’ in this sense." This limited edition print is numbered 68 of 450. Carver; Kentaro Maeda (very famous carver in Japan), Printer; Ritsuzo Sato, and Publisher; Yuyudo. Red seal says " Tatsumi Ken In" . Size is very large: paper size is 19 and 1/2 inches by 16 and 1/2 inches. Colors are vivid, vibrant and in layers which makes them appear soft. The lines are crisp as this is extremely low number print. Absolutely stunning original hand made Japanese woodblock print. Nearly perfect condition except for some extremely faint foxing on verso which are only seen in bring natural sunlight. Never framed. Additional pictures gladly provided upon request. Comes with original presentation folder which carries the title as "Snow". |

Print has never been framed and comes with original presentation folio. Extremely nice details. Strong texture and ink bleedthrough on fine Japanese washi. Large size measures 16.5 x 19.2 inches. Tatsumi characters and red artist's seal in lower left of image. Kentaro Maeda carver's seal, Ritsuzou Sato printer's seal, and red Tatsumi inspection seal in right margin. Jujudodehan publisher's seal in left margin. Exquisite. Comes with original folder, cloth covered folio box and outer cardboard box. |
You are bidding on a very rare and large original Japanese woodblock print “Snow” from the Series “Modern Beauties Bijin Ga, Gendai Bijin Fuzoku Gotai” signed by the famous Shin-Hanga artist Shimura Tatsumi (1907-1980). My family has collected Japanese woodblock prints for several decades. Tatsumi was born in Takasaki in Gunma prefecture under the given name of Sentaro in 1907. Shimura Tatsumi was specialized in bijin-ga (woodblock print of beauties), the genre of the depiction of beautiful women. The women in his woodblock prints look very fashionable, trendy, beautiful and cute - with big eyelashes and a sensual lipstick mouths. Shimura Tatsumi was mainly a traditional Japanese painter so he did not create a lot of bijin ga prints before he died in 1980. The designs of his woodblock prints have an individual style and are something special - and beautiful. Because of these reasons, his Bijin ga woodblock prints are hard to find and are highly priced in Japan and Europe. The size of this woodblock print is 19 x 16 1/2 inches. All four borders are intact. The artist’s signature and his chop mark are in the lower left corner of this print. Four borders are intact. In the lower right border of this woodblock print, there is a small red chop mark of the artist’s signature again. The carver and printer’s seals are also in the lower right border above the small red artist’s chop mark. The publisher’s seal is in the lower left border. At the left of the bottom border, it is written 423/450, means this is the number 423 out of 450 total print. As far as I can tell there are no defects, foxing, or stains, and this woodblock print is in excellent condition. Shimura Tatsumi’s prints are not too often to be found. |
