Catching Fireflies
Chikanobu- Chikanobu was one of the few Japanese woodblock print artists who continued to depict traditional Japanese themes at the end of the 19th century. His wonderful triptychs of Japanese beauties are among his most well known designs. These images of women in their daily lives illustrate an elegant era that Chikanobu tried to preserve through his artwork.
Catching Fireflies- Catching fireflies was a party pastime of of the wealthy in 19th century Japan. In this scene four young beauties are shown in a garden enjoying the evening and the brilliant fireflies. This is a great scene and a lovely illustration of an era long past.
Triptychs- These triptychs illustrate a scene in three individual panels. The triptych format gave the artist the flexibility to show a scene in detail. Each panel stands alone and is part of one scene at the same time.
These prints are 110 years old and show some lovely signs of age without being worn or faded. The colors are nice and the detail very fine. Each panel has been backed with a reinforcement sheet to preserve the paper. They make a stunning impact on the wall and are a nice chance to add an original Japanese antique to the home at a moderate cost.
Signed- Chikanobu; with title Image size- 27 3/4” x 14” (3 oban tate-e panels 9 ¼” x 14” each)
