KAWASE HASUI (1883-1957)

Framed 1936 Japanese woodblock print by Kawase Hasui titled "Deer Strolling Along Kasuga Shrine, Nara." The print measures 6" by 8 1/2". Sealed Hasui.
Offered for sale is a Japanese woodblock print by Kawase Hasui (1883-1957), titled Deer Strolling along Kasuga Shrine, Nara, from the series Shinto and its Architecture, 1936. It is from the estate of Robert O. Muller, the world renown collector and dealer of shin hanga school prints. It is illustrated at plate Hb-s7 of Kawase Hasui: The Complete Woodblock Prints by Kendall H. Brown. It was published by The Watanabe Color Print Co.

The print is in very good condition, with extremely fresh colors. There is some thinning to the top reverse corners and a paper flaw in sky. The dimensions are approximately 6 7/8 x 4 1/2 inches, plus margins.

Description: Print magazine, "Ukiyo-e to Hanga" (The Ukiyo-e and Modern Prints). The first volume of the official magazine of "Nihon Ukiyo-e Kyokai" (Japan Ukiyo-e Association).
The cover page is woodblock printed showing a beauty holding a sensu fan by Shinsui Ito. The front page is also woodblock printed "Nara, Kasayama", size 115 x 175 mm, by Hasui Kawase.

Width Item: 7.1 inches = 18.0 cm

Height Item: 10.2 inches = 25.8 cm

Impression: Very good ... Two woodblock prints. 10 black and white photographic prints.

Colors: Very good.

Quality: The front cover … Slightly toned. Slightly soiled. Light foxing. "Kasayama" by Hasui … Slightly toned. Light foxing on the margins. Overall, the book is in very good condition.
This print is from the 2nd edition of the book published in the 1955.
