A Woman after the Bath"
by Ito Shinsui, 1960
This is a beautiful original etching by perhaps the best of the bijin printmakers of the early 20th century, Ito Shinsui. The print is double oban size, very rare, about 18 x 15 plus margins. It bears the correct 6mm Watanabe publisher's seal as indicated in the Shinsui catalog raisonne. It is in good condition, with excellent color and impression; there are some minor handling creases in the margins, likely from the printing process. Very beautiful baren syuji background, the swirly effect caused by rubbing the printing baren in a circular motion. The print features very subtle use of pale pink around the girl's eyes, ears and breasts. Also note the gentle fog from the steam rising from her wash basin.
