Shin Hanga: First Set of Modern Beauties: #12 Fireflies

Artist: Ito Shinsui
Format: Large Oban tate-e : 17" x 11.5" approx

Subject: A bijin of the Showa era with a 'flapper' style hairdo copied from the Jazz Age west, she has a peony tucked behind her ear. She is wearing traditional Japanese kimono and obi and is watching a firefly in the evening air above her. She holds a fan and a firefly cage lit by three of the insects. Considered to be one of Shinsui's finest designs. Subject illustrated double page color,, #61, Ito Shinsui: All the Woodblock Prints, Watanabe, Iino, Kono & Hirasawa, Japan, 1992.

Provenance: This impression bears the personal seal of Watanabe Shozaburo and the gift seal 'Shintei' on the verso. It was presented to the printer as a gift and has remained in his family by descent ever since.
