Colors excellent - very good … shomen-zuri patterns on the hair
Condition good … vertical center fold, transfer red ink stains on the left, missing part on the upper right edge, slightly soiled, brown spots and a pin size hole on the upper margin.
Description Kuchi-e illustration for the novel, "Rei-Netsu" (Coldness - Fever) by Koyo(?). An old handwritten note in Japanese is attached on the reverse. It indicates postcards were made from this design and sold at the exhibition of Meiji Literature Reference Materials.

Kuchi-e: The Naked Prayer

Artist: Tomioka Eisen
Format: Aiban yoko-e: 9" x 13" approx

Subject: A naked girl praying in the river.

Tomioka Eisen was born in Nagano prefecture under the name of Hidetaro. He went to Tokyo to study drafting and was employed by the army as a civilian. Later he resigned from the army and became a full time illustrator. Most of his works were illustrations for newspapers, journals and kuchi-e.

Date: c.1900

Condition: Fine. Never folded.

Subject: A young bijin having a bath in a lake, behind her is her clothes hung up to dry.

Date: c. 1900

Condition: Fine colors. Very slightly trimmed. Album backing paper. Vertical centrefold. Light offsetting. Minor soils, marks and flaws. Generally good state.

Impression: Fine impression with gauffrage and burnishing.
