Shin Hanga: Beauty Before a Mirror

Artist: Natori Shunsen
Format: Large oban tate-e, silver mica ground: 16.5" x 11.5" approx

Subject: From the series of three: Shunsen bijin sanshi - kagami-no mae. Against a silver mica ground, a bijin making adjustments to her coiffure.

Hand-applied edition stamp on reverse reads: no. #22 of the limited edition of 150 impressions. Both rare and exquisite.

Date: 1928

Condition: Full size. Minor marks and flaws. Generally very fine state.

Kagami no Mae (Before the Mirror) from the series Shunsen Bijin no Sanshi (Three Shunsen Beauties) by Natori Shunsen. Genuin woodblock print. Later Heisei era impression. Fine color condition and impression. 19.1 x 13.0 inches. Publisher's seal and watermark, Koike carver's seal and Watanabe printer's seal in left margin. Strong texture and ink bleedthrough. Light silver mica background. Never been framed. Comes with original presentation folio. Compare to print on page 119 of the book "The Female Image, 20th Century Prints of Japanese Beauties". Scanned in two parts.
