Sosaku Hanga: Peonies

Artist: Suiko Fukuda
Format: Large Oban tate-e: 16" x 10.5" approx

Subject: Suiko Fukuda is from the circle of Kyoto painters and printmakers, where he was born and where he studied Japanese-style painting at the Kyoto School of Fine Arts and Crafts. The artist contributed regularly to Bunten and Teiten. Woodblocks known from Suiko Fukuda are rare and show bird and flower subjects drawn in a realistic and traditional style.

Date: c.1950

Condition: Full size. Paper slightly toned. Some offsets. Minor marks and flaws. Fairly good state.

Colour: Very good

Impression: Fine

Peony and Bee by Fukuda Suiko. Original woodblock print dated Showa 11 (1936). Fine condition, color and impression. Oban size measures 15.8 x 10.5 inches. Artist's red seal in upper left corner. Title, date and Unsodo publisher's seal in left margin. Beautiful color gradation. Print has never been framed and is still tipped inside the original presentation folder. Artist's red seal also on presentation folder.
