Notes (1st edition)This scene was originally published by the Kyoto publisher Sato Shotaro in the early 1930s, with prints carrying a read publisher seal in the margin. It would appear that the publisher Unsodo obtained the remaining stock at some time, perhaps when Sato went out of business. Unsodo stock carry no publisher seal. The Unsodo edition carries the dating of January 1941.

Shin Hanga: Temple in Snow

Format: Oban tate-e: 14.5" x 10.25" approx

Subject: The Silver Pavilion under a blanket of snow -Ginkakuji Yuki.

This was Asano's first commercial design and was produced in quite small numbers and now very difficult to find.

Takeji Asano was born in Kyoto. He underwent a long and intensive art training - first at the Kyoto City School of Fine Arts, from which he graduated in 1919 and later at the Kyoto City specialist School of Painting with graduation in 1923. One of his teachers was Tsuchida Bakusen.

Condition: Full size. A minor matt mark bottom left in corner, otherwise generally fine state.
