This is a nice original Japanese woodblock by a well known listed artist. The theme is one of his favorites Kokeshi like children at play. The woodblock is of three children at a picnic and is clearly signed. Hitoshi lived from 1896 to 1956 he studied with Matsumoto Fuko in 1915 then with Katayama Nanpu. He was born in the Ibaraki prefecture. He was a Japanese style painter then in the 1940s he designed a series of prints with subjects of children in a moderate comic style manner, many prints were published by Kato Junji. This woodblock measures 15.5 x 10.5 inches. There is some minor expected age wear, a few foxing dots a bit of wear to paper, it presents well has no tears and looks like our photos. |
