The Stokes Collection
This is a genuine original shin hanga Japanese woodblock print by Tsuchiya Koitsu titled "Brush Warbler on a Plum Tree Branch", dated Showa 15 (1940), brush signed and seal in the image. The print was published by Doi Hangaten, bears the circular Doi watermark in the upper left corner, the carver is Harada, and the printer Yokoi. Harada and Yokoi were active in the 1930's (Guide to Modern Japanese Woodblock Prints:1900-1975, Helen Merritt Nanako Yamada, University of Hawaii Press, 1992.)
The print is in fine condition. This is a very early or first edition print, based on the highly visible woodgrain in the blue and grey backgrounds. Excellent impression, excellent color, registration and bleedthrough. No foxing, toning folds or creases. The print is not setdown or trimmed. The print has never been mounted or framed.
This is a Japanese woodblock print, framed under glass of a beautiful bird on a gnarly cherry tree branch. It was purchased in Japan right after world war two. On the back is a hand written note nameing this the "Queen of Birds", who is singing the first song of spring. It measures 11.5" by 17" not including the frame. Good condition, however there are two dark spots in the upper margin where the adhesive has bled through the paper. The print image itself is excellent.
Japanese woodblock print by Tsuchiya Koitsu (1870-1949). Bush warbler on a blossoming plum tree. Dated Showa 15, or 1941, published by Doi Eiichi. Harada/Seki. I can’t guarantee a date, says it was purchased in 1990 on reverse. Basically perfect. 17” X 11 1/4”.
