Shin Hanga: Thirty-six Views of Fuji Series: The Wave

Subject: This design is considered to be the masterpiece of the set.

Tokuriki was Born in Kyoto, he graduated from the Kyoto City School of Fine Arts and the Kyoto City Specialist School of Painting in l924. He exhibited paintings, but in l929 switched to "Mokuhan" (woodblock prints). He exhibited prints in numerous solo exhibitions in Japan and abroad and was at the hub of creative print activities in Kyoto where he played a major role in maintaining the vitality of traditional woodblock art. Tokuriki belonged the l2th generation of a Kyoto family long designated as official artists for the famous Honganji Temple. Before the War, Tokuriki made a number of sets and series, published by Uchida, Unsodo and Kyoto Hanga-in. Tokuriki considered his "Thirty-Six Views of Fuji", published in l940, to be his masterpiece set. Tokuriki continued to support and encourage traditional woodblock printing well into his 90's. He was also an active collector of Ukiyoe throughout his life.
