Subject: Chikanobu was a Meiji era artist who followed in the footsteps of earlier Japanese woodblock print masters in choosing female beauties as his primary subject matter for prints. Although the earlier artists usually featured popular courtesans of the day, Chikanobu uses geisha and upper class ladies to illustrate typical activities or customs
