This print was created by Ishiwata Koitsu (b.1897 in Tokyo). His given name was Ishiwata Shoichiro. Ishiwata began his artistic career as a textile designer for the department store Nozawaya, located in the smaller city of Yokohama. The area around Yokohama would later become the subject of many of his landscape prints. He became interested in hanga after meeting with Kawase Hasui in 1917. He was the member of the group of artists like Kawase Hasui, Takahashi Shotei aka Hiroaki, Shiro Kasamatsu and Tsuchiya Koitsu who created the prints for publishers Watanabe Shozaburo. In 1935, Ishiwata left Watanabe's studio to work with the publisher Kato Junji. The landscape prints of Ishiwata Koitsu are very rare. His prints were not so populare with Western customers, perhaps because they were more realistic than the romantic ideals perpetuated by Hasui. Here is “Uji Bashi” (Uji Bridge), one of Ishiwata’s great prints published and printed by Kato Junji in 1937. Signed and sealed by the artist inside image. Inscribed and dated in Kanji on the left margin. Has publisher seal Kato Junji on the right margin, indicate it’s early prewar edition. It’s one of the best designs of the artist. Oban size 15.75" by 11". Good impression, excellent color, bleedthrough and registration. |
