You are bidding on a Japanese woodblock print “Woman Dressing” signed by the famous Shin-Hanga artist Hashiguchi Goyo (1880-1921). It says May Taisho 9 (1924) above the artist’s signature at the lower left side of the print close to the border. This woodblock print is a part of a large number of Asian art and Japanese woodblock print collections in my family. We are gradually selling them. The size of this woodblock print is 20 1/4 x 8 1/4 inches. The colors, which are vivid and vibrant, are in layers. This woodblock print is not attached to any backing paper or cardboard. Ink bleeding can be seen through the back of the Japanese mulberry Washi paper. All four borders are intact. There are chop marks in the lower left border, which describes the publisher, carver, and printer. There is also a hand-writing in ink 164/180 underneath the chop marks. I guess this is the 164th print out of total 180. There is a crease horizontally across the upper middle of the print, on the woman’s breast. Except this, there are no defects, foxing, or stains. This woodblock print is in excellent condition. I am not sure about the age of this print because Taisho 9 was 79 years ago.
The history behind this print-

Goyo designed one print with the venerable publisher Watanabe and then decided to publish his subsequent works privately (including this design). He only made 14 print designs in his career and Goyo's prints immediately commanded high prices in the market. At the time of his death, Goyo left several works uncompleted and his wood blocks for the completed prints were intact until the Kanto earthquake. His family published his uncompleted designs and reissued some prints of his previous works from the original blocks. Our print offered this evening is from one of the posthumous 1922 printing reissues of the "Beauty Dressing."

This print was collected by an elderly Japanese dealer who resided mostly in the USA after WWII. He purchased this print in the early 1960's. When in Tokyo, he was a friend of Saito's, an acquaintance of Jacoulet and knew several other prominent figures in the field of Japanese art. He died last year and left a few favorite treasures behind. This print is one of those treasured possessions.

This design; Beauty Dressing- A jewel of the 20th century print period, this Goyo masterpiece is one of his most well known images. The young beauty is shown dressing after a bath. The long narrow format of this print accentuates her slender figure. In this print, the pale background is printed with a shimmering mica ink just like the original, the cotton kimono printed with a subtle embossed pattern- both fantastic effects. A wonderful print that captures the essence of Goyo’s genius, considered a Japanese woodblock masterpiece.

Signed- Goyo-ga
Image size- 5 1/4" x 18 1/2"
Condition- Perfect condition with no flaws to note. Excellent color, perfectly emulating Goyo's original. No fading, fine linework, rivaling the first edition Goyo prints. This print has been stored only, never framed.

Set of 6 Prints by Goyo in the original case. Excellent condition. Numbered edition, marked "not for sale" in Japanese - evidently this was a private publication when it was first created. These prints were produced by Yuyudo publishing house in Japan. Often they are sold individually, sometimes described as being sanctioned by the family of Goyo. That was a separate edition that was sold publicly in a limited edition of 150, evidently. This is different but the printings and carvings are just as masterly. Probably some of the same printers and carvers were involved.
Beauty in a Long Undergarment, 1920

Hashiguchi Goyo, 20th century master-

With the permission of Goyo’s heirs, a couple small commemorative runs of his prints were produced. These prints are also very rare today. But, they offer an opportunity to collect a Goyo woodblock reprint at a cost more in line with most collectors’ budgets. These reprints were produced to the same exacting standard of Goyo’s originals. Expert carvers were contracted to produce the highest quality wood blocks and printers meticulously reprinted Goyo’s originals with the same attention to quality and detail. These reprints are on beautiful, hand made paper printed with the same colors and mica detail as Goyo’s originals. The prints offered tonight in our auctions are from one of those reprint sets.

Woman Dressing, 1920 (fine 1970’s woodblock reprint)
Hashigushi Goyo (1880 - 1921)

Woman Dressing- Some consider this simple, yet elegant image Goyo’s masterpiece. The young beauty is putting on a soft cotton robe after the bath. Her hair is pinned loosely up, a few strands fall casually forward. Her skin is a perfect smooth white and the robe falls from her shoulders exposing a hint of her breasts- incredible design. The soft colors, heavy paper and careful attention to detail reflect the quality of this print.

This is truly a Japanese woodblock masterpiece. This image is one of the most sought after prints in the market. If you would love to own a classic Goyo, but find the original out of your price range, this is a fantastic opportunity to own an exact woodblock reprint.

This Goyo reprint- In the 1970’s a small group of woodblock reprints were made of Goyo’s incredible images. His prints are so rare and sought after, these prints offered an opportunity to have a Goyo print without the expense of an original. Original Goyo images sell in the $7,500 - $20,000 range (this print being in the more expensive category). This print is a unique opportunity and a great value. These prints of Goyo’s works are the only woodblock reprints ever produced of his prints and are very hard to come by.

This print comes with both original folders. It is in the original heavy rag presentation inner folder which fits inside a titled outer folder. See photo with inner folder.
