Original Chikanobu (1838 - 1912) Japanese Woodblock print
Spring Games

Comments - Charming illustration of girls playing in early springtime, the plum tree next to the house covered with pink and red blossoms and buds. At left, three girls play a game of battledore, the feathered shuttlecock hovering in the air above. Two more children bounce a ball on the verandah at right, while another watches, a puppy wearing a ruffled red collar perched on her shoulder. Beautiful detail and patterning in the colorful kimono, with burnishing in the black robe at right. An attractive and lighthearted image.
