This print, done around 1950, is typical of Kawano's work: simple, abstract shapes, strong design, and use of wood grain to remind us of the medium. Here, two girls suggest a feeling of tenderness and intimate friendship with merging arms and subtle facial expressions. A small label from T.Z.Shiota on the reverse indicates the title, "COUPLE <8>", and inventory (?) numbers. In excellent condition, this woodblock is signed in pencil at the lower-right within the image. Print size is 9 1/4" x 14 3/4"; sheet size is 11 1/4" x 16 5/8".
This print is approx 11 by 16". Good bleed through of paint as shown in the pictures. It is unframed and signed in pencil and has the artist red stamp. This one is of 2 girls. There is a crease on one of the scirts. The edges are a bit wrinkled.

KAORU KAWANO

TWO GIRLS

JAPAN 1916-1955

Original wood block in colors (c. 1955). The image size is 14 3/4"x9 1/4" on 16 1/2"X11 1/4" heavy rice paper, with margins. Signed by the artist with the chopmark in red in the lower right corner of the image. With the publisher's seal in the lower right corner verso. With the artist's name and title verso in pencil.

This is a fine impression in very good condition with former hinges at the top. There is a vertical crease at the top right of center that is about 3 1/2" long and about 2 1/2" into the image. The crease is mostly visible in the black area of the print although it crosses the right face also. There are two groups of scratch marks in the upper right margin and lower right margin.
