DESCRIPTION :This eBay auction is for a vintage Japanese woodblock print of two kittens by the listed Japanese artist Kauro Kawano (1916-1965). The artist's pencil signature is located in the lower right corner of the image ( see photos). There are no other marks, stamps, or labels located on this unframed wood block print.

CONDITION :This Japanese woodblock print is in very good to excellent condition and free from tears or repairs. This print is not glued down and appears to have the original uncut margins. The back of the print has excellent bleed through of the ink. There are signs of typical minor mellowing of the paper, some typical minor foxing, and a small 1/2 inch stain along the lower left margin which does not affect the image. The lower right and upper right corners of the margins have some minor creases which do extend into the image. All other aspects of this print are excellent.

MEASUREMENTS :The overall paper size measures approximately 17 ¾ inches by 11 ½ inches and the plate size measures 14 ¾ inches by 10 ¼ inches.

You are bidding on an original Japanese woodblock print by listed artist Kaoru Kawano (1916 - 1965). Kawano is best known for his portraits of young girls. (I am not familiar with this artist. I reference the above information to item # 917144661.) He also did a series, in similar style & technique, of cats/kittens. This 3-color print portrays two napping kittens, one of whom has just popped up it's head to take a peek at you!
IMAGE SIZE: 10.25" x 15"

PAPER SIZE: 11.25" X 16.5", of a rag content, cover stock weight

SIGNATURES: Artist chop - lower right corner of image; Publisher(?) chop - reverse lower left corner of paper.

CONDITION: I will describe the piece to the best of my ability. Please keep in mind that the piece is from an estate auction of Orientalia collectors, & not fresh out of a museum flat file.

The print is in it's original "found" state, & does not appear to have ever been framed. It is hinged at the very top in it's original bookmount, of what appears to be a rag paper, with the original, protective, acetate cover over it. The acetate was tacted (it is now detached) to the mount with masking tape. This signifies a date of execution to the 1940's - 60's, as this was the common form of presentation for sale. It has managed to remain in relatively EXCELLENT condition, all things considered. There is no noted damage to the image, or paper. However, I do note that the border of the print paper is slightly yellowed, in my opinion.

The artist is Kaoro Kaoru Kawano as signed in pencil. Paper is about 16" by 11".
Strong color and Mica highlights. Great bleed through.

Fine original conditon with no rips or repairs. Signed on the front and the back as shown. I do not know who the artist is but the design looks like something Saito would do. Approx. 17" x 11.25".
