Offered for sale is a wonderful, first edition Japanese woodblock print by Kawase Hasui (1883-1957), titled Tea Ceremony Room in Night Rain at Lakeside, 1935. This design is illustrated at plate 426 of Kawase Hasui Mokuhangashu (Kawase Hasui Catalogue of Woodblock Prints), Narazaki, Muneshige, ed., (Tokyo: Kodansha & Mainichi Shinbun, 1979). It is part of a series of prints that were privately commissioned by the then current owner of The Mitsubishi Company, and published by Watanable Color Print Co. While this design bears a circular Watanabe seal in the lower right corner of the image, savvy Hasui collectors know that the 1935 Mitsubishi series in an exception to the general rule of determining the state of post-earthquake/pre-war designs by the presence of a publisher's cartouche in the margin.

This print is has wonderfully fresh colors and is in very good condition, with no condition issues to note, aside from some faint residue in top reverse margin from the original presentation folder. The image measures approximately 13 by 8 ¾ inches, plus margins.

Old Early 20thC Japanese Signed Woodblock Print *NR*

…… It is difficult to see, but there are Japanese characters impressed into the bottom margin of this early 20th century Block Print. Including the margins it measures 10” by 15”. At the very bottom you can see a ¼ inch tear. Also, there was a label or something once attached to the back at the bottom, which is no longer there. This has left a feint mark which you can see in my close-up photo. I was able to purchase this antique Wood Block Print for a great price and to make sure that it sells there is No reserve. …… If the high bidder wants it I can send the frame and glass this print came in.

A very rare, very limited original authentic 1935 Kawase Hasui woodblock print! This print is one of six prints produced by Hasui called
"Collection of Views of the Moto-Hakone Minami Mountain Villa". This 1935 series of prints were commissioned by the Iwasaki family and published by Watanabe. No series or print title appeared on these prints! These prints were sold to foreign clients as: "Glorious Views of The Garden of Hotel De Yama, on The Lake Hakon Run By International Tourist Corp. Tokyo". Each print was mounted in a cardboard folder with an english title which differed from Hasui's original Japanese title. The prints were only produced prior to WW2. Please see "Kawase Hasui, The Complete Woodblock Prints", Book 2, pg. 478, #368. This print does not have a Watanabe seal, but is watermarked in the upper left print border, (please see image). Print measures approx: 10 3/4" x 15 7/8" with folio measuring approx: 16 1/2" x 11 3/4" overall. Print colors are outstanding! Slight discoloration present in margins and reverse. Two slight creases present to right margin.

This rare color woodblock printed in 1935. The Baron Iwasaki Koyata commissioned Kawase Hasui to create 8 prints as souvenirs of the Baron's villa and gardens at his country estate in Hakone for his guests.

This work is catalogued as Number 368 by Hotei. Considered by many as the most beautiful and most important work of the set, Number 368, "The Old Farm House", is the only print in the set that Hotei illustrates in his catalogue with a full page in color.

The set was offered in 1935 for export with English titles ( see photo of loose title tag ). The full English title of this work is -"Old Farm House on Baron Koyata Iwasaki's Estate at Hokone". The overall series title is embossed in relief printing in Japanese characters on the bottom margin below the image. Series - Minami Sanso Fukei ( Views of the Summer House of Minami ).

Date: Showa 10 ( 1935 ): Image size: Oban, approx. 33.3cm by 21.3cm ( 13 1/8 by 8 3/8 inches ): sheet size: approx. 40 by 27cm ( 15 3/4 by 10 5/8 inches ): Signature: Hasui: seal: Kawase: Publisher: Watanabe ( 6mm seal ): the number 6 is printed in embossed relief printing in lower left bottom margin below the image ( see photo ).

An excellent impression of this beautiful print: this work comes with its original folio sleeve ( see photo ): its original full original margins: the sheet is loose in its folio - never attached to folio: all original -never glued or laid down: no hinges or remnants of hinges: one tiny pin hole in the extreme upper left margin corner: slight toning from the folio paper.
