Condition Fine, with strong blind-stamped contour lines of the woman's body.

Notes: Dated and signed in the upper left, "Showa yonnen jugatsu Kotondo saku" ('Showa 4 (1929), October, work of Kotondo'), followed by the square artist's seal reading "Kotondo".

Embossed in the lower margin, "Kamisuki" (Combing Hair)

Seal of Kawaguchi in lower right margin, and seals of Ito (block carver) and Komatsu Wasakichi (printer) in the lower left margin.

When the partnership between Sakai and Kawaguchi ended c. 1931, Kawaguchi retained the blocks. This print is the second state, solely by Kawaguchi.

This is from the edition of 300, No. 23, that Kawaguchi printed by himself in 1930 after the breakup of his relationship with Sakai.

Beautiful impression with very fine and subtle pink shading and outline in her body.

printer on its verso edition number 54/300.
Frankly speaking its condition was not good enough to pay yen 100,000
for its creases and mat burn. Please refer to the enclosed images and judge
by yourself.

Shin Hanga: Combing the Hair

Artist: Torii Kotondo
Format: Dai oban tate-e: 18" x 12" approx.

Subject: Torii Kotondo was born in Saito Akira in Tokyo, at the age of 15, he became the adopted son of Torii Kiyotada. Kiyotada was the seventh generation head of the well known Torii family of print designers, and Kotondo assisted him with the production of Kabuki posters, billboards. He studied the techniques of Yamato- e painting and contributed woodcuts and illustrations for Entertainment Illustrated Magazine (Engei Gako). In 1917, Kotondo entered the studio of Kaburagi Kiyokata where he met Shinsui and Hasui. During the next few years he developed his own distinctive style of bijin-ga.

Combing Her Hair by Torii Kotondo. Genuine woodblock print. Fine condition. Later imrpession. 19.0 x 13.0 inches. Ito carver's seal and Watanabe printer's seal in left margin. Wonderful color and excellent ink bleedthrough. Watermark in lower left margin. Nice use of blind printing to replace key block lines. Never been framed. One of Kotondo's most spectacular bijin scenes. Compare to print #170 on page 128 of the book "The Female Image 20th Century Prints of Japanese Beauties".
