|Yoshitoshi, Tsukioka - 100 Moons - Moonlight under trees- 1.jpg is:
100 Phases of the Moon: # 59
Format: Oban tate-e: 13.75" x 9.25"
Subject: 'In the Moonlight under the Trees a Beautiful Woman Comes'. A conventionally beautiful woman dressed in luxurious Chinese costume stands by a flowering plum tree under a perfect full moon. She is the Spirit of the Plum Tree, who appeared to Zhao Shixiong, a Chinese poet of the Sui dynasty (589-618). One fresh spring morning, Zhao climbed the slopes of the sacred mountain of Luofu in southern China to admire the flowering plum trees there. As evening drew on, he fell asleep under the trees, and a nymph appeared to him in a dream. Waking in the magical light of a full moon, he realised that the Spirit of the Plum Tree had visited him, and wrote a poem about his experience.
Condition: Fine colors. Trimmed to image at left. Japanese album backing paper. Minor marks and flaws. Generally fine state of preservation.
Impression: Fine impression with gauffrage.
|This artwork was created by Taiso Yoshitoshi (1839-1892) the last creative genius of woodblock prints of Meiji era. The print offered here belongs to the series “Tsuki hyakushi” (One Hundred Aspects of the Moon) which was issued in 1888. It’s probably the most famous series created by the artist. The print I’m offering here depicts a spirit of the plum tree visited Chinese poet Zhao Shixiong (the Sui Dynasty (589-618)) in his dream. Oban size 14 1/2" by 10". Signed Yoshitoshi-ga and sealed Taiso. Publisher Akiyama Buemon. Great impression. Original condition. The print is not trimmed or setdown. Has full margins. Good color and registration.
