Yoshitoshi, Tsukioka - 100 Moons - Moonlight under trees- 1.jpg is:

100 Phases of the Moon: # 59

Artist: Yoshitoshi
Format: Oban tate-e: 13.75" x 9.25"

Subject: 'In the Moonlight under the Trees a Beautiful Woman Comes'. A conventionally beautiful woman dressed in luxurious Chinese costume stands by a flowering plum tree under a perfect full moon. She is the Spirit of the Plum Tree, who appeared to Zhao Shixiong, a Chinese poet of the Sui dynasty (589-618). One fresh spring morning, Zhao climbed the slopes of the sacred mountain of Luofu in southern China to admire the flowering plum trees there. As evening drew on, he fell asleep under the trees, and a nymph appeared to him in a dream. Waking in the magical light of a full moon, he realised that the Spirit of the Plum Tree had visited him, and wrote a poem about his experience.
