This is a RARE and Interesting Modern Japanese Woodblock Print. Shima Tamami, Japanese, S&N woodblock, birds, 1961. Striking is the word for this vibrantly coloured, highly stylized image of two birds. Hand signed by the artist. (one of Japan’s best post-war women print-makers. (one of only 10 artists chosen by James A. Michener for inclusion in his seminal book “The Modern Japanese Print – an appreciation” – in fact, one of her prints adorns the cover.). This original woodblock is dated 1961 and titled in Japanese (unread). The sheet measures 45 x 30cm (17¾’ x 11¾”); the image is 38 x 25cm (15” x 10”). Very good condition with excellent colour. The reverse shows some staining but this is not visible from the front. The woodblock is unframed and is not laid down.

Take one look at this Shima woodblock of "Two Friends" and you say they must have been good ones to exude all that happy boldness, brightness and color. This is the most just-plain cheerful Shima I've ever seen.
Made in 1961, the woodblock's image weathered the years well, the colors as bright as ever. No bends, no flaws of any kind.
A previous owner, however, keep the happiness in a bright room and 50 years of sunlight sunburned, or toned, the margin out 1/4 inch. You can see the effect in the signature picture. My own opinion is the woodblock would lose little matted back to the toning line. I'm a full-disclosure dealer. The only surprises I want when my prints show up are good ones.
