This is an original oban size, shin hanga Japanese woodblock print by Kawase Hasui (1883-1957) titled "Chii Mountain Temple, Korea", dated Showa 14 (1939), signed/sealed in the image by the artist, titled and dated in kanji along the left margin. The print was published by Watanabe Shozaburo, and bears the Watanabe 6mm seal (1945-1957) which makes this print a lifetime edition (printed during Hasui's lifetime).
The print is in overall fine condition. Fine impression, excellent color and registration. No foxing, toning, folds or creases. The print is not setdown or trimmed. Paper size is 10.25" x 15.25".

Titled and dated Showa 15 (1940) in Japanese in left margin.

Watanabe publisher's "E" seal (1932-1942) in right margin.

Hasui signature in black ink with red sui seal in lower right of image.

Excellent registration and impression with very strong bleedthrough of pigment to the verso. It is quite amazing that an image dominated by brown colouration could be so full of depth and atmosphere. A most captivating image.

The print has been extremely well kept down the years. It has never been set down. Has full margins. No foxing or toning whatsoever. The print looks amazingly fresh.

They came from the living estate of a prominent Charlotte, North Carolina, 103 year old woman who resided in Japan until 1940.
