This is an genuine original Japanese woodblock print “Trees and birds” by great sosaku hanga artist Shima Tamami (b.1937). Created in 1962. The print is not trimmed or setdown. Excellent impression, colors and registrations. Texturised like prints of Kiyoshi Saito or Junichiro Sekino. Printed on thick paper. Signed in pencile by the artist on bottom margin in roman style and inscribed in japanese. Numbered 70/100. Oversize double oban 22 3/4" x 16". This is an oversize original modern Japanese woodblock print by Tamami Shima. The print is pencil signed by the artist, titled in kanji, dated 1962, and edition is 44/50. The print is in very good condition. Fine impression, color and registration. Good bleedthrough on the verso. No foxing, toning, folds or creases. The print is not trimmed, but is tipped by the upper corners to a piece of acid-free matboard. Image size is 14" x 20.25, paper size is 15.25 x 23.25.

THIS LARGE OVERSIZED JAPANESE WOODBLOCK PRINT IS BY THE KNOWN SOSAKU HANGA, CREATIVE MOVEMENT ARTIST: TAMAMI SHIMA, BORN:1937. THE SUBJECT BEING GEESE IN FLIGHT IN A WOODLAND SETTING. SHIMA IS WELL KNOWN FOR HER TEXTURE & FORM, STARK CONTRASTING COLORS, USING THE NATURAL WOOD GRAIN PATTERNS TO ADD TO THE EFFECT OF THE SCENE. PENCILED SIGNED BOTTOM RIGHT: TOMAMI SHIMA, BOTTOM LEFT INSCRIPTION IN JAPANESE, EDITION: 70/100 DATED:1962.A LARGE WOODBLOCK PRINT, MEASURING OVER ALL: 22.5 X 16.25, THE IMAGE SIZE IS 20.5 X 14. THIS WORK HAS AN STRONG BLEED THROUGH EFFECT TO THE REVERSE SIDE, PRINTED UPON EXCELLENT QUALITY HEAVY RICE PAPER STOCK. THERE IS SOME SLIGHT RUBBING ON SOME MARGINS AND A FEW LIGHT CREASES STARTING AT THE BOTTOM BORDERS, DOES NOT DETRACT FROM THE IMAGE, FAINT MAT LINE SHADOW.
