| Notes (1st edition) | Dating of 1952, written on the original first-edition folders, has been confirmed by a collector.
In regards to the scene, "Late Summer", a collector in Finland as stated "My mother in law got it from a Japanese Olympic delegate in Helsinki 1952". As the most common dating of this series is *circa* 1953, I think it is now most likely that this series was first published in 1952.

Saturday, 12 May 2007 Ross, I checked your website out this evening and see that you're working on the seals, looks interesting so far. In case you're interested I found a print from the 150 edition (unsigned). I have a database of print images that I borrow from the internet. Monday, 21 May 2007 You are bidding on a very rare, beautiful LIMITED_NUMBER original Japanese woodblock print “Bijin” from the Series “Modern Beauties Bijin Ga, Gendai Bijin Fuzoku Gotai” signed by the famous Shin-Hanga artist Shimura Tatsumi (1907-1980) IN EXCELLENT CONDITION. The size of this woodblock print is 17 3/4 x 11 inches. The colors, which are vivid and vibrant, are in layers. This woodblock print is not attached any backing paper or cardboard. Ink bleeding can be seen through the back of the original Japanese mulberry Washi paper. All four borders are intact. The artist’s signature and his chop mark are at the lower right corner of this print. Four borders are intact. In the lower right corner of the bottom border of this woodblock print, there is the publisher’s chop mark. At the left of the bottom border, it is PENCIL WRITING LIMIT_NUMBER 28/300, means this is the number 28th print out of 300 total prints. On top of this LIMITED NUMBER, there is another artist’s chop mark. In the lower right border, there are carver and printer’s chop marks. As far as I can tell there are no defects, foxing, or stains, and this woodblock print is IN EXCELLENT CONDITION. |

Compare with same print on page 182 of the book "The Female Image, 20th Century Prints of Japanese Beauties". | Wednesday, 1 August 2007 This Rare Series; The series was published by the Nihon Hanga Kenkyusho publisher of Tokyo in 1953. There has been conjecture as to the actual number of prints released. While the brochure that accompanied the complete set noted a limited edition release of 300 prints, some accounts have the number actually printed as low as 100 prints of each design. This was a fairly common practice among 20th century publishers and prints were produced in groups as they sold. We have never sold prints from this series and don't anticipate having them again. The set that we are selling from this evening was the property of an elderly Japanese collector/dealer who lived in the USA and is being sold from his estate. Comments- A stunning, exceptional shin-hanga beauty print by Tatsumi. The young woman with a scarf over her head, and a few strands of hair falling loose, is the epitome of a Japanese beauty. An elegant and sophisticated young woman, she looks demurely down. A wonderful image with beautiful wood grain detail in the kimono, lovely, subtle embossing on the headscarf. The print title "Dancing Girl (Maihime)" is embossed in Japanese in lower margin, center. Signed-Tatsumi's signature in the lower right with the red Tatsumi seal below Publisher- Nihon Hanga Kenkyusho (operated until 1953), carver and printer's seal in the right margin (see photo). Image size- 9 7/8" x 14 5/8" Paper size- 11 1/4" x 18 1/4" Condition- In excellent condition, as shown. Beautiful rich color and fine detail. A full sheet (with registration chop) - not trimmed. Outstanding and a good choice for the discerning collector. |
