Notes (1st edition)The first edition of this scene is signed "Kakei" and titled "?? Nihonmatsu" (two kanji unread). Later editions are signed Shotei with a simpler title "Nihonmatsu". K-6 in the Shotei.com Kakei catalogue (pre-earthquake first edition). M-107 in the Shotei.com Shotei catalogue.

Pre-earthquake Shin Hanga: Snow at Nihonmatsu

Subject: A snowy evening at Nihonmatsu.

First state printing, pre-dating the great Kanto earthquake of 1923 which destroyed the blocks of the publisher Watanabe. Numbered 352 on verso. Rare.

For auction a very rare pre earthquake Shotei / Kakei japanese woodblock print, this print is sealed Kakei, believed is that this is the name Hiroaki Takahashi used before the great kanto earthquake in 1923.

After using the name Kakei he changed his artist name in Shotei.

This picture is the "deluxe" edition, havy thick paper with full margains, the normal editions have much thinner paper and are most of the time trimmed to save paper and costs.

The woodblock is in good condition, with some minor toning.		 Title: Modern Japanese Woodblock Print Watanabe Shotei This modern Japanese woodcut print is by Takahashi Shotei. It depicts a beautiful snow scene. It is a full sheet approx. 15 x 6 1/2 inches. It is in good condition :) I believe this print is published by Watanabe. It is entitled "Nihonmatsu".
