Notes (1st edition)Artist: Utamaro I Format: Oban tate-e: 15.25" x 10" Subject: An extremely elegant bust portrait of Hanaogi of the Green-house Ogi ya in Edocho. This is the second print from Tsu hana mitate, a set of four prints illustrated in Shibui, 'Ukiyo-e Zuten' p.78. Other impressions of this design are recorded in Kruml Catalogue, 12 #21 and as the frontispiece to Binyon and Sexton, Japanese Colour Prints. One of the rarest of Utamaro's heads. Condition: Full size, completely untrimmed. Laid down. Some small areas of professional restoration at right edge and base. Some soiling, marks and flaws. Generally quite good state.

Colour: Very good with nominal fading

Impression: Fine with gauffrage

Hanaogi of the House of Ogiya by Utamaro. Genuine woodblock print. Fine condition. Showa era Takamizawa impression with publisher's, printer's and carver's seal on verso. Oban size measures 16.4 x 10.9 inches. Very high quality woodblock print with excellent texture and ink bleedthrough on fine washi. Excellent detail. Beautiful portrait of Edo's most famous geisha.
