This auction is for a Japanese woodblock print by Kawase Hasui. The print is 7 5/8" X 15 1/2" which includes the margins. This print is in nice condition however the top corners have been clipped.

Pristine gallery condition. Full margins; never laid down no tears, folds, creases or foxing. This print is perfect in every way.

Good bleedthrough to verso. Complete with HASUI signature and sui (see scan). Authenticated by Doi Eiichi's rectangular publisher's seal and double off-set carver/printer (Harada-Hamano) seal indicating this is a later edition struck from the original blocks.

It is not laid down. It has in the past been safely removed from tipping on the verso without damage. Condition is good to very good, without soiling, tears, or fold marks. Please see photos.This piece measures approx 15.25 inches X 6.5 inches by sight and approx 18 inches X 10.25 inches framed. Full woodblock with borders measure approx 7.90 inches X 15.90 inches.

This beautiful Japanese wood block print by Kawasi Hasui (1883-1957) was purchased from an established Asian Art Gallery here in Chicago. It was recently appraised by an independent appraiser as:

You are bidding on an original Japanese Woodblock print by famous artist Kawase Hasui, known for his superb and realistic landscape scene. The print has 4 small tears on the bottom margin, otherwise in great condition with excellent coloring und bleed through. Measures 15 3/8" x 5 3/8".

dating proof

This Japanese woodblock print titled "Itako in the Evening" was created by noted Japanese artist and printmaker Kawase Hasui (1883-1957). This tranquil scene features a cresent moon rising over a tranquil river as a Japanese boat sails along the shore. There are dramatic reflections of the moon, trees and light from inside the house shimmering across the water. This print was purchased at the Kabutoya Gallery in San Francisco in 1977. This woodblock print is in excellent condition: no creases, tears, foxing or stains; there are two rice paper hinges on the reverse upper corners where the print is attached to the original gallery matting. This print has been stored flat in an archival Hollander box and has never been framed.

This O-hosoban print image measures 14-1/4" (36 cm) high and 6-1/2" (16.5 cm) wide, the paper measures 15-3/4" (40 cm) high and 7-1/2" (19 cm) wide.
