This is an genuine original Japanese woodblock print by great shin-hanga artist Kawase Hasui (1883-1957) titled "Iris Flowers ". The print is dated Showa 4 (1929) on the bottom margin. This is extremely rare edition published by publishers Kawaguchi & Sakai, and bears the K&S “chrysanthemum and river” publisher seal on the bottom margin. The sixteen prints that he designed for Kawaguchi and Sakai are considered among his finest work. Each design was originally published in a limited edition of 100 prints. Some prints by Hasui offered now on ebay are later editions of much less quality (sometimes from recarved blocks) but this one is real early prewar edition. No foxing, toning, folds or creases. The print is not trimmed or setdown. Fine impression, color and registration. Signed by artist Hasui, has seal “Sui” in the image and titled in kanji at the bottom margin. Image size 9.5" x 14.25", paper size is 10.5" x 16".

Original Japanese woodblock print by Kawase Hasui titled "Iris" This rare and lovely woodblock print of flowers dates from 1929 and is one of 16 Hasui designs published by Kawaguchi and Sakai. It has a limited edition sticker (98/100) on the back of the print, which indicates that it is an original early edition print. This edition marking also bears Hasui's signature in Japanese and his red seal (see photo at the bottom of the listing).
This print is good to very good condition overall with strong, vibrant colors. There is light toning in the front margins while the back of the paper has some darker areas of toning & browning incurred during a previous framing. The print could likely be cleaned by a qualified paper conservator or it could be displayed as is. Please also note that the margins of the print have been slightly trimmed from their original size.
The size of the print is oban, approximately 10 x 15 inches.

ONE OF HASUI'S MASTERPIECES. |
This sale is for a beautiful original woodblock print entitled "Iris" by famed Japanese artist Kawase Hasui (1883-1957). It was last for sale over 25 years ago at a gallery in Boston (closed since the early 90's - owned by a member of my family) but has been in storage ever since. The size of this print is oban. It is in excellent condition with nice vibrant colors, not quite as dark looking as some other examples I have seen. I am fairly certain this is a 1929 first edition print by Kawaguchi & Sakai. It does have the numbered and sealed sticker on the back indicating that it is #49/150 (I think) as well as the made in Japan stamp for export. |
