This print is entitled Hinomisaki, Izumo and is from the series "Souvenirs of travel, third series". Izumo is the old name for present day Shimane prefecture. This is on the San-in (Shadow) side of Japan facing the Sea of Japan to the west. It is a night scene along the coast with a view out to the turbulent sea through a cluster of weathered pines. The print is very interesting in that it was printed entirely of shades of blue. (There is another lighter version that suggests early dawn.) It reminds one of the aizurie prints of the early ukiyo-e masters, Hokusai in particular. Hasui did just a handful of prints in this technique. It is a rare and wonderful piece.
The publication date is 1924 and it is one of the more desirable early works by Hasui. The original edition pieces from this series have a hand stamped series seal with the series title and a Watanbe a or b seal also hand stamped on the print. The seal stamped in the left-hand margin of this print is that of the series title and the seal in the lower right hand corner is a Watanabe "a" 6 mm seal. This is thus from an original edition of this image. (The image in "Kawase Hasui, The Complete Woodblock Prints" is identically sealed.) You should be aware that of the Hasui prints sold on ebay very, very few are original edition prints.
Condition: The print was removed from its backing. There are tape burns and remains of glue on the back. This can be seen in the image of the reverse below. There are 2 creases (these also can be seen in the images below.) and there is toning.
COUNTRY OF ORIGIN: japan DATE: 1924 MATERIAL: wwodblock print SIZE: 10 1/4" x 15 1/2" (26 x 39.4 cm) CONDITION: as noted above |
This is a beautiful estate find for your collection. Appears to have been professionally mounted and framed some time ago. We did not touch it in any way at all. We know nothing about these things so please ask any questions prior to bidding. It is marked with a red mark (stamp) in the lower left and the lower right has a mark that seems to be part of the print. The image measures 14 1/4" x 9 1/4" (may be larger under the matt). And 20 3/4" x 15 1/2" (outside frame). It is in beautiful condition as you can see.
