Evening at Itako, 1930
Kawase Hasui (1883 – 1957)

Evening at Itako

A wonderful rural view of the setting sun imparting a soft glow over the scene at Itako. In a typical Hasui departure from the famous places, we see a quiet corner with laundry out to dry and two figures walking along the river’s edge. A beautiful design with the fine printing found in the Kawaguchi Hasui prints.

Hasui Kawase oban,1930 "Evening at Itako

Size: 12 x 16
Color: Blues,blacks
Condition: Fair to Good condition. This Japanese wooodblock print has been in my family since 1958. My parents purchased this in the "ginza" at Fukuoka, Japan during my fathers tour of duty with the Air Force. He and my mother often took trips to the ginza to look for "treasures". This one has traveled all around the world with them. The print has clear publisher markings the Shobisha's "red tilted seal" on reverse with good bleed thru on back. It is matted with paper and sticked with Unsodo Co. Teramachi Nijyo, Koyota, Japan. After many hours of research have discovered this print was sold by Unsodo during this time period. It is also stamped on front with 054. Historians do not seem to know why, but perhaps some type of "limited edition". Beautiful example of "shin hanga" Japanese woodblock print. Original water color was done by Kawasi in 1930. This was a later edition print from the mid 1950's.
