1932 Kawase Hasui Moon at Ninomiya Bay Woodblock Print

ESW presents, from a fine San Diego estate, this 1932 Kawase Hasui Woodblock Print "Moon at Ninomiya Bay". Signed with publishers and date marks.Print 10 1/4 by 15 1/2 inches. I believe I have the date right (I am not perfect at reading Japanese), photo below with date mark should tell the whole story. It has not been trimmed, there are two tape residue marks in the upper corners on the back (shown in the photo), the toning of the paper is represented perfectly in photo showing the back. Color bright and is consistent throughout.

This is a genuine original oban sized shin hanga Japanese woodblock by Kawase Hasui (1883-1957) titled "Spring Moon at Ninomiya Beach", dated Showa 7 (March1932) brush signed and sealed in the image. The print was published by Doi Hangaten carver is Harada and printer is Ito.
The print is in fine condition. Fine impression, excellent registration, excellent color and strong bleedthrough. No foxing, toning, folds or creases. The print is not trimmed or setdown. Print size is 10.75" x 15.75".

The print is # 273 in the Hotei Hasui catalog raisonne.
This is a 9 1/4" x 14 1/4" woodblock print on paper by the Japanese painter and printmaker Kawase Hasui, 1883 - 1957. This image is ' Moon at Ninomiya Beach' (Originally published by Doi Teiichi, 1932). Unframed. Fine condition.

This auction is for a Japanese woodblock print from the late, Ukiyo-e, (Floating World) Shin-Hango (New Print) era by the reknown master printmaker, Hasui Kawase, (1883 - 1957) born with the given name of Bunjiro. A year after his death he was declared a National Treasure by Japan. This particular print is titled "Moon at Ninomiya Beach", oban, published by Doi Teiichi, in 1932.

This is a lovely, night scene, which Hasui was most famous for. It depicts a small, solitary figure, under a full moon, walking along the edge of the sea. Moonlight reflection glistens off the top of the pines, & along the crest of the wave as it breaks on the shore. The palette is muted, in tints & shades of green, blue, & black.

PAPER SIZE: 15" x 10.75"

IMAGE SIZE: 14.25" x10.5"

SIGNATURE: Artist chop, in red, & signature, in black, in the lower right corner. There is also script in the margin. (see photos #3 & #4) I am unable to read this. Whether it is the title, a poem, signature of the publisher, I cannot say. However, I've learned that at least part of this, if not all, may be the copyright mark.

CONDITION: This print is in it's "found state". It came out of a box of Japanese prints at an estate auction of Orientalia collectors, who traveled to Japan several times. It was wrapped in tissue paper & again in heavier brown paper.

I will describe the condition to the best of my ability. Please keep in mind that it did not come out of a museum flat file….. I see no major damage, that is, no tears to the piece. I see no stains, nor foxing, readily apparent to the naked eye. I cannot state that it has never been exposed to any sunlight. I see no evidence of it ever having been hinged, let alone framed, in it's lifetime. I do note the following: There is a watermark in the paper, of parallel lines, & I also note the usual imperfections that occur in the making of handmade printmaking paper. There are small, light crimps, found mainly in the border, though some do extend into the image. These appear to be from the pressure of a press, or occurring in the print drying process of stacking between the heavier blotter paper, again under some pressure to keep the prints flat until dry, & are not uncommon for woodblock. I cannot say with 100% assuredness that they were all caused by that. However, none are dtracting from the aethetics, or value, of the print. There is no evidence of the piece ever having been folded, & it does appear to have been kept flat all these years. On the back of the piece, along the very bottom edge (see photo #6) is the following: in pencil - Ninomiya Kaigan; in ink - N984 - Hasui - 65.00; & again in pencil - P8. Catalogue, or index number? Kawase Hasui (1833 - 1957)
"Spring Moon at Ninomiya Beach"
Japanese Woodblock Print - 1932
Reprinted 1951??This beautiful vintage Japanese woodcut is from an estate sale. It is Kawase Hasui's "Spring Moon at Ninomiya Beach" originally printed in 1932. I think this one was reprinted in 1951, but I'm not sure about that. This luminous, moonlit seashore scene of Ninomiya Beach is in the Kanagawa Prefecture on Japan's northwest coast.

The print is 15 3/4" X 10 5/8" and the image size is 9 1/2" X 14 1/2". The left side (1st set of Japanese character pictures above) is a poem conveying the feeling of looking up at the full moon from the base of the large tree. The publisher is Doi Hangaten with the Doi seal. The carver/printer is Harada/Yokoi.

The back of the print is inscribed as shown with a date of April 22, 1951, but luckily none of the inscription shows through or has bled through to the print surface! The print was originally framed and tipped in at the top with tape. As shown in the photo, I have left the tape in place (with some of the backing attached - the top margin of the print is not torn) to be removed by the experts. There are some minor vertical creases at the top margin due to the tape. There is very slight foxing on the margins but overall the print is in excellent condition with deep color saturation and crisp lines, evoking a sense of tranquility and wonder.
Kawase- Moon at Ninomiya Beach- 1.jpg is:

"Moon at Ninomiya Beach" Woodblock Print by Kawase Hasui (1883-1957), painted in 1932.
This print has been in my family since it's purchase in 1958 and has always hung in an air-conditioned house. Image size is 14 1/4" H x 9 1/4" W. Every effort has been taken to make these photographs represent the actual color and condition of this print, but individual PC monitors may differ.

Print was purchased in Tokyo in 1958 and has remained framed until recently, so the print is in EXCELLENT CONDITION!!

"Moon at Ninomiya Beach"

-1932

Print size 15.5" x 10.5" (Full Oban)

Post-War Strike ORIGINAL

Pristine gallery condition. Full margins; never laid down no tears, folds, creases or foxing. This print is perfect in every way.

Good bleedthrough to verso. Complete with HASUI signature and sui (see scan). Authenticated by the Doi Eiichi rectangular publisher's seal, and double off-set carver/printer seal.
This incredible spring moonlight scene is stunning in every way! The shimmer of the moon on the water is awe-inspiring. The gradation of color (bokashi) throughout the print is a study in design and printing mastery.
