Notes (this edition) These notes were written by the original owner/seller/auctioner of the item and may be inaccurate.: | Hello Dr. Walker,
I am a novice collector. I recently purchased a print, Evening at Ushibori. I see that you have samples of five versions on your site.
Could you tell me what revision I have by the attached photo?
It would be much appreciated if you could give me any insight on this print.
Best Regards,
Hello x,
Your print was printed by Shobisha during or after the 1960s. A rare 1950s edition also exists by Shobisha that contains a red publisher seal in the bottom margin. As examples see:

There is of course the first edition by Sakai and Kawaguchi in 1930 shown the database.
Cheers,

Hasui 'Evening at Ushibori' (1930)
Beautiful early evening sunset scene by Hasui Kawase (1887-1957) titled “Ushibori no Uhgure” (translates as “Evening at Ushibori”) and margin dated originally as “Showa 5” (or 1930). This print is one of 16 Hasui images published during 1929 and 1930 by Kawaguchi & Sakai (and as such, bears no Watanabe seals)—a posthumous edition struck off of the original blocks. Printed by Shobisha Publishers (who acquired the woodblocks when K & S dissolved in 1931). Circa 1990's. The workmanship in both carving and printing is simply superb—very nice gradation of colors (“bokashi”) seen virtually throughout print to the water and sky’s colors; and life-like reflections in the water. Print is in very good condition—no tears, no stains, no fading-does have small (1/4 inch) minor rubbed spot in orange sky area. Image measures 9 3/8 x 14 ¼ inches.

Kawase HASUI - Japanese Woodblock Print
Twilight at Ushibori - published by Kawaguchi & Sakai, 1930
Original HASUI prints published by Kawaguchi & Sakai are as RARE as most of the pre-earthquake first editions. This is ONE of those prints. Twilight at Ushibori is an 'understated' masterpiece of design and printing. This print has STRONG COLOR and IMPRESSION, it is VERY FINE in condition. The 'keyblock' line is UNBROKEN and CRISP. Lower left on the verso is the script showing this print to be a proof. STRONG bleed through on the verso with the desired 'baren' marks present. Pictures shown are accurate for COLOR and CONDITION. The paper is heavy washi and dai-oban in size. The image size is : 10 5/8 x 15 inches or 27 x 38.1 cm with full margins as published. This print is listed by Narazaki as KS-11.
Note: This print has been PROFESSIONALLY cleaned and any toning removed by one of the leading Japanese woodblock print conservators who is located in the Netherlands.
