Condition: Very fine, with superb colors.
Notes: As stated in Hotei Vol. 1, #218a (dark state), is not illustrated in the Hotei catalog. The production of the twenty-six Selection of views of the Tokaido spanned 1931 to 1947, the longest time required for any of Hasui's series. - Hotei Vol. 1

Provenance: The collection was initially purchased directly from S. Watanabe print shop in the mid-1940's and has always been properly stored away in a single collection. The majority of the works showcase rarely seen MINT colors; several far exceeding numerous examples seen in prior collections.

Rainy Season at Ryoshimachi, Shinegawa, 1931
Kawase Hasui (1883 – 1957)

A wonderful scene of an afternoon rain at Ryoshimachi. The setting is perfect, the quaint bridge over the water, classic old houses in the town and two women conversing. The figures are highlighted with brighter colors in a classic Hasui touch- beautiful.

Signed- Kawase Hasui with red artist’s seal “sui”
Sealed- Publisher Watanabe, 7mm seal, later edition original, from original blocks
Image size- 9 ½” x 14 3/8” (oban tate-e)
Condition- Excellent, no toning, tears, not mounted, full margins

Dated Showa 6 (March) (1931)

Original atozuri wooblock print (later edition from original blocks) . Bearing the red Watanabe Heisei era seal in the margin. This indicates the print was created during the reign of the current Emperor Akihito, who ascended to the Throne in January 1989.

Oban size print on thick, modern washi.

Fresh from a Florida estate we are listing a large collection of Japanese woodblock prints, including many modern and classic designs. This Kawase Hasui measures 15 1/4 by 10 1/4 inches. Published by Watanabe before WWII. Kawase- Rainy Season at Ryoshimachi, Shinegawa- 2.jpg is:

Beautiful Japanese woodblock print. 10" X 15". Very good condition and signed by artist. This print has never been framed or displayed but kept enclosed in paper for years. I purchased this print from a very old estate.

Genuine Japanese Woodblock Print. Oban size, Tate-e (vertically aligned print). Not one of the recent reprintings! The Watanabe Shozaburo round seal appears to be the 6mm size.
