Okayama Bell Tower

A cozy and evocative afternoon scene with the wonderful, traditional buildings around the Okayama bell tower. A single figure, back to the viewer, walks between the buildings, blooming red flowers in a flower box- classic Hasui.

Signed- Kawase Hasui with red artist’s seal “sui”
Sealed- Publisher Watanabe, 7mm seal, later edition original, from original blocks
Image size- 9 ½” x 14 3/8” (oban tate-e)
Condition- Excellent, no toning, tears, not mounted, full margin
This is an genuine original Japanese woodblock print by great shin-hanga artist Kawase Hasui (1883-1957) titled "Kanetsuki hall bell tower, Okayama (Okayama no Kanetsukido)”. The print is dated Showa 22 (1947). This print is original first edition published by Watanabe in 1947, and bears appropriate early 6mm seal on the right lower corner of the image (pay attention on closeup). One from the best Hasui’s rainy views. Great impression, good color and registration, excellent condition. Signed by artist Hasui, has seal “Sui” in the image and titled in kanji at the left margin. Oban size 15 1/2" x 10 1/2".

ORIG Hasui Kawase Woodblock Okayama Bell Towe

This is a Japanese Woodblock named Okayama Bell Tower. It is signed and please email if you need more of the writing on it. ) it does have the red seal (sui) in the lower left corner and the black one in lower right. It is the scene of a figure walking along the tower with a bright yellow umbrella. There are no stains , it was in a frame and is attached by the corners as seen to a matte. There is a small tear in the lower right corner as seen in pics. There is light foxing only to the white surrounding border. It has writing on left side as seen. Edges are all smooth and no fraying. It measures approx 15" x 10.5"

Condition "Pristine"-never laid down-full margins-no tears, no folds, no creases, no foxing, no stains-PERFECT! Good bleedthrough on verso. Complete with HASUI signature and Sui (see scan) and authenticated by Watanabe cartouche and seal.


Another one of Master HASUI's famous rain scenes. The deep blues contrasted with the rich browns along with the shimmer of the rain-soaked streets is truly lovely.
