This is a 9 1/2" x 14", pencil signed woodblock print by the Japanese painter and printmaker Hasui Kawase, 1883 - 1957. This is pencil titled lower left Zentsuji Temple, Shikoku. Dated 1937 lower middle and pencil signed lower right. This has Watanabe's circular seal lower right. Fine condition.

Zentsuji Temple in Rain
A classic rain scene reminiscent of so many spring days in Japan. The rain falls over the temple grounds. Hasui’s view of the temple entrance and tall pagoda beyond is a quintessential, stunning Hasui rain scene.

Kawase Hasui - "Zentsu-ji Temple in the Rain"
Dated Showa 11 (March) (1936)
Original atozuri wooblock print (later edition from original blocks) . Bearing the red Watanabe Heisei era seal in the margin. This indicates the print was created during the reign of the current Emperor Akihito, who ascended to the Throne in January 1989. Watanabe 7mm seal in the image by right margin beneath the trees.
Oban size print on thick, modern washi.

Pristine gallery condition. Full margins; never laid down; no tears, folds, creases or foxing. This print is perfect in every way.
Good bleedthrough to verso. Authenticated by HASUI signature and sui.
The use of sophisticated printing techniques, the gradation of colour (bokashi) is used extensively throughout this print.

Zentsuji Temple in Rain by Kawase Hasui. Genuine woodblock print dated Showa 12 (1937). Later impression from original blocks. Oban size measures 15.7 x 10.5 inches. Fine condition. Red Watanabe and 7 mm seals in lower right corner. Nice ink bleedthrough. One of Hasui's best rain scenes.
