Heisei era impression with red Watanabe seal in right margin. | Guaranteed original Japanese woodblock print by the shin hanga artist Kawase Hasui. Subject: Sobu Garden Meiji Shrine. Date: 1951. Print bears the Watanabe publisher red round 6mm seal which indicates that this is an original impression. Not a posthumous edition or a later lifetime impression. Print is in excellent overall condition with excellent color and impression. The very edge of the top margin may be very slightly toned. This appears more substantial in the jpeg as it is barely noticeable in the actual print. Print is very fresh looking. There is some pencil writing on the verso as well which is not a flaw and can be erased. Oban design measures 10.25" x 15.25". |
This is a beautiful original woodblock print by noted shin hanga master Kawase Hasui. The print depicts families strolling through an iris garden. It is oban size, about 14 1/2 x 9 1/2 plus full margins. Condition is good; there is a faint mat line, which you can barely see in the scan (and it's very faint in person as well). Color and impression are very good. The print bears the small red 6mm Watanabe seal in the lower lefthand corner, indicating that this is a true first edition print (dating from 1951, after Watanabe stopped using seals in the margins). It is, in fact, one of Hasui's last prints, number 542 out of 567 that he did. |
