Genji Monogatari: Chapter LII: Kagero

Artist: Kunisada II
Format: Oban tate-e: 14" x 10"

Subject: On a log raft in the pouring rain a bijin shelters a boatman with her umbrella. Beside them, a bronze brazier sends smoke into the night sky. This fine series by Kunisada II highlighted the talents of the artist. In the rare first edition printings (like this) with lacquer and blind printing they mark a high-spot in Japanese print production in the 1850's.
