Illusration of Chapter 43, "Kobai" (The Rose Plum) from "The Tale of Genji" (the 11th century novel written by Lady Murasaki) by Kunisada II (1823-1880). Published by Tsutaya Kichizo the 11th month of 1857. The print depicts a central beauty, possibly the daughter of Prince Hotaru, and her attendants being approached by two other beauties in a springtime setting surrounded by flowers. There are embossed highlights in the title cartouche at the upper right and in the white outer kimono. The publisher's seal and date seal are at the lower left. The signature and "aratame" censor's seal are at the lower right. Vertical oban print measuring 14 1/2"V x 9 7/8"H. Very good overall condition and impression quality. Minor soiling on the border area and loss to the bottom left corner. Baren marks are clearly visible on the back. ??1 ????????? ??? ??
