“JAPANESE WOODBLOCK … YUKI NO MIYAJIMA …BY TSUCHIYA KOITSU .. 1936 … EXCELLENT CONDITION” - this is a 7” x 10” colorful woodblock on a 8” x11” piece of very nice paper … it has some bleedthrough to the back of the print - we were given the following print information ….. The Artist: Tsuchiya Koitsu, Publisher: Doi Teiichi, Carver: Ikeda, Title: Yuki No Miyajima (Snowy Miyajima), Date: January 1936 - it is in excellent condition with no holes, tears or rips and it has never been framed - there is Japanese printing above the red seal in the lower right corner on the dark portion of the woodblock … it does not photograph well, so I have tried to sketch it for you

For auction is this old Japanese woodblock print by Tsuchiya Koitsu, measuring 11.5" tall by 8" wide. Im not sure if it is a first edition, but I was told that it is because of the publisher information, signature and watermark at the upper left. I myself am not an expert on Koitsu - I leave it up to the Ebay world, but it is an old print. The title is Yuki no Miyajima, or snowy Miyajima (an island off Hiroshima). It is signed Koitsu and with a seal, published by Doi Hanga Ten, carved by Harada and printed by Yokoi. Dated Showa 11 or 1936.

The print has overall browning from a bad old mat it was stuck on while it was framed. This makes the print a bit darker than it should be and there are spots where it didn’t discolor as badly, so it has some spotting. No rips or tears though, and not trimmed either.

Condition: This print was brought to the US by an US Army officer who served with the occupation forces in Japan between 1947 and 1950. When I acquired it, the print was in a cheap frame with a NON-Archival mat. There is some age darkening at the extremities. Please see the full-sheet images below showing both the face and verso of the print. There are no tears and the color of the print is very bright.

A fine original signed and sealed color woodblock print in Chuban format by Tsuchiya Koitsu. He was a major 20th Century Japanese block print ukiyo-e artist. This is one of his most famous and popular prints, dating from 1936. The image size is about 10" by 7". I have examined the print out of the frame and it is in excellent condition, with bright colors, full margins and all the correct original chop marks on the sides.

Koitsu-Snowy Miyajima- Eiichi-Harada-Hamano.JPG is:

Authenticated by Master Koitsui's signature, Doi Eiichi seal, watermark and the all-important double-offset Harada/Hamano seal.
